European Commission: EU R&I Commissioner resigns

19. May 2023

EU Research and Innovation Commissioner Mariya Gabriel has resigned to form a government in her home country Bulgaria. In her statement, Commission president Ursula von der Leyen thanked Gabriel in particular for her contribution to the implementation of Horizon Europe, including the European Innovation Council.

Gabriel’s portfolio as Commissioner included not only research and innovation, but also education, culture, youth and sport. Until further notice, her portfolios will be overseen by Executive-President Margarethe Vestager from Denmark and Vice-President Margaritis Schinas from Greece, with Vestager in charge of research and innovation.

Replacing Gabriel will take some time. Bulgaria needs to nominate a new Commissioner, who then has to pass a hearing with the European Parliament. It is not a given that the new Commissioner would get the same portfolio as Gabriel, as portfolios may be amended by the Commission president.
