New EU strategy for universities and the facilitation of European higher education cooperation

On 18 January 2022, the European Commission has adopted two initiatives to underline the assigned role to tackle Europe’s societal challenges and to enable them to make significant contributions to overcome these challenges.

European Commission launches Horizon Impact Award 2022

The European Commission has a launched a new edition of the Horizon Impact Award, a prize dedicated to EU-funded projects whose results have created societal impact across Europe and beyond. This prize aims to illustrate the wider socio-economic benefits of EU investment in research and innovation and to encourage and inspire project beneficiaries to use their research results to create value for the society at large.

European Commission announces New European Bauhaus Prizes

On 18 January, the European Commission launched the New European Bauhaus Prizes for the second time. The first edition of the prizes was launched in April last year, the winners were announced in September.

Guidelines on tackling foreign interference targeting EU research organisations and higher education institutions

On January 14, the European Commission published guidelines for tackling R&I foreign interference in research organisations and higher education institutions in the EU. Both the EU Member States and various stakeholders have contributed to the creation of this guidance document.

Call for applications for the renewal of Mission Boards

On 5 January 2022, the European Commission has launched a call for applications for the selection of new members of the Mission Boards, which are tasked with providing advisory support to the implementation of the five EU missions within the context of Horizon Europe. The Mission Boards resulting from this call will build on the work of their predecessors (operational until December 2021).

DESCA-Musterkonsortialvertrag für Horizon Europe

Die DESCA (Development of a Simplified Consortium Agreement) Core Group hat ihren Musterkonsortialvertrag für Horizon Europe veröffentlicht. Zu der Gruppe, die von der Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft und der Helmholtz-Gemeinschaft koordiniert wird, gehören neben KoWi auch ANRT, EARTO, LERU, VTT und ZENIT.

EU Missions Work Programme updated and Info Day

The establishment of missions is a novelty in Horizon Europe and aims to address some of the biggest challenges facing our society in the five areas of “Adaptation to Climate Change”, “Restore our Ocean and Waters by 2030”, “A Soil Deal for Europe”, “Cancer” and “100 Climate-Neutral and Smart cities by 2030”.

New Pre-Draft of Annotated Model Grant Agreement published

The European Commission published another pre-draft of the Annotated Model Grant Agreement (AGA) for Horizon Europe on 30 November 2021. The document follows a first pre-draft of the AGA, which appeared in the Funding & Tenders portal in the summer of this year.

Council of the EU: Adoption of a European R&I Pact and the ERA Policy Agenda

On November 26, 2021, research ministers of the EU member states adopted a "Pact for Research and Innovation in Europe" (in the form of a non-binding Council recommendation).

Council Regulation: Establishment of nine Joint Undertakings (Institutionalised European Partnerships)

On 19 November 2021, the Council of Ministers of the European Union adopted a regulation (Single Basic Act) for the establishment of nine Joint Undertakings (JUs) under Horizon Europe.

DIGITAL Europe Programme: first Work Programmes published

The DIGITAL Europe Programme was launched in 2021 for a timeframe of seven years. On 10 November 2021, the European Commission published the first three out of a total of four work programmes foreseen for the DIGITAL Europe Programme.

The EU Commission is currently organising online information events on some of the EU missions that officially started at the end of September 2021.

On October 26, the European Court of Auditors published its Annual reports concerning the financial year 2020.
