PPP Sustainable Process Industry through Resource & energy Efficiency (SPIRE)
The objective of the Public-private partnerhip SPIRE is to foster the manufacturing base in Europe by optimizing industrial processing, reducing the consumption of energy and resources and minimising waste.
The European process industry is at the core of most industrial value chains in Europe and comprises eight specific sectors: cement, ceramics, chemicals, engineering, minerals and ores, non-ferrous metals, steel and water. These sectors all have a high dependence on resources (energy, raw materials and water) in their production and processing technologies and they all have a clear and urgent interest in improved efficiency and competitiveness which actually leads to driving the implementation of many European policies.
The SPIRE PPP will be newly established as a part of Horizon 2020. The budget for its activities is about 900 mio. EUR. Members of the PPP are the European Union, represented by the European Commission, and the different industry sectors (chemicals, steel, engineering, minerals, non-ferrous metals, cement, ceramics and water), which are grouped for this purpose in the non-profit association “A.SPIRE aisbl”. This association represents more than 70 industrial and research process industry stakeholders from all over Europe.
Most of the calls for this PPP are part of the sub-programme LEIT (Nanotechnologies, Advanced Materials, Biotechnology and Advanced Manufacturing and Processing) but some aspects are also covered by the workprogrammes of the Societal Challenges Energy (themes „Energy efficiency“, „Low-carbon energy“) and Climate action (theme „Waste“).
