Societal Challenges

Secure Societies 2018-2020

On 27 October 2017 the European Commission has published the Work Programme 2018-2020 containing new calls for proposals in the Societal Challenge  ‚Secure Societies - Protecting freedom and security of Europe and its citizens‘. The overall budget for the 2018 call is approx. EUR 211 million. For the calls in 2019 there will be EUR 241 million available. For the calls in 2020 (approx. EUR 264 mio.) the Work Programme just comprises a list of topic titles.

The aim of the Societal Challenge ‚Secure Societies - Protecting freedom and security of Europe and its citizens is to enforce the security of European citizens and society by developing innovative technologies, solutions, foresight instruments and knowledge-base. Security risks and threat scenarios for infrastructures, for border security and for the Single Digital Market must be recognised timely, avoided or their damage limited.


The Work Programme contains the following thematic priorities:


  • Disaster-Resilient Societies (DRS)
  • Fight against Crime and Terrorism (FCT)
  • Border and External Security (BES)
  • General Matters (GM)

Digital Security

  • Cybersecurity and Digital Privacy

Rules for submission: The research priorities are composed of "topics", which are outlined in detail in the Work Programme and must be integrated into the research proposals.
