Inclusive, Innovative and Reflective Societies 2018-2020

On 27 October 2017 the European Commission has published the Work Programme 2018-2020 containing new calls for proposals in the Societal Challenge ”Europe in a changing world – Inclusive, innovative and reflective societies” . The overall budget for the 2018 call is EUR 171.95 million. For the calls in 2019 there will be EUR 183.41 million available. For the calls in 2020 the Work Programme comprises only an allocation of budget to the calls but no specific topics.

The aim of the Societal Challenge “Europe in a changing world – Inclusive, innovative and reflective societies” is to foster a greater understanding of Europe, provide solutions, and support inclusive, innovative and reflective European societies in a context of unprecedented transformations and growing global interdependencies. 

Calls for proposals

The Work Programme comprises the following call for proposals:

  • Migration
  • Socioeconomic and cultural transformation in the context of the fourth industrial revolution
  • Governance for the future

Calls 2018 will open on 07.11.2017.

Proposal submission: one-stage submission

Deadline: 13.03.2018

Further aspects

Like the previous work programmes of the 6th Societal Challenge, the new one also contains other instruments ("other actions"), in addition to the three thematic tenders.

Beside the financing of COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology), it includes the support of individual studies (for example the European Innovation Scoreboard) and prizes such as the "Horizon Prize for Social Innovation in Europe".

A considerable proportion of the budget is used for these instruments (2018: approx. EUR 37 million, 2019: approx. EUR 36 million).

European Innovation Council: Fast Track to Innovation

The Pilot initiative ‚European Innovation Council‘ comprises calls for the financing instrument Fast Track to Innovation (EIC-Fast-Track-to-Innovation/H2020-EIC-FTI-2018-2020) which is found under the Horizon 2020 Work Programme Part – Towards the next EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation: European Innovation Council (EIC) Pilot" (part 17 of this Work Programme).

The two year Work Programme 2018 - 2020 is quite complex in terms of funding objectives, funding schemes, proposal submission procedures and deadlines.
