Transport

Cross-cutting aspects

The research and innovation agenda of the Societal Challenge "Transport" comprises, among others, calls and initiatives such as Green Vehicles, Small Business and Fast Track to Innovation for Transport,  Blue Growth or the European Innovation Partnership "Smart Cities and Communities".

There are intersections with the Joint Technology Initiatives Clean Sky 2, SESAR 2 and Fuel Cells and Hydrogen 2. In Summer 2014 a new Joint Technology Initiative Shift2Rail in the rail sector has been adopted.

The environment- and climate-related objectives of transport research are closely linked to the third Societal Challenge "Secure, Clean and Efficient Energy". Transport aspects are also part of the Focus Area "Blue Growth" which is covered by the second Societal Challenge "Food Security, Sustainable Agriculture, Marine, Maritime and Inland Water Research and the Bioeconomy". Aviation safety-related subjects may be funded within the seventh Societal Challenge "Inclusive, Innovative and Secure Societies".

Synergies also exist between the Societal Challenge Transport and the so-called "key technologies" funded in Part II of Horizon 2020, Industrial Leadership. The focus will be on innovation: Funded demonstration and pilot projects shall facilitate the market launch and take-up of products and services and support the European transport industry. This particularly includes information and communication technologies (ICT) and aeronautics within Part II.

The European GNSS Programme will develop new techniques for driving and locating vehicles.

Proposals on subjects related to this Societal Challenge might also be eligible for funding in the framework of Future and Emerging Technologies, FET Open (bottom-up) or FET Proactive (top-down), if they involve high-risk, visionary and interdisciplinary topics for the development of future technologies.
