Swedish EU Presidency Research Priorities

13. Jan 2023

On 1 January, Sweden took over the EU Presidency from the Czech Republic. While there are no major legislative dossiers in the field of research that coincide with the six-month term of the Swedish Presidency, there are still some interesting initiatives to be aware of. A number of events, covering areas including research infrastructures, health and innovation are also planned.

Under the overarching R&I theme a "Accelerating the transition to Open Science", Council Conclusions on "high-quality, transparent, open, trustworthy, and equitable scholarly publishing” are planned. There will also be a Presidency conference on "The Potential of Research Data: How Research Infrastructures Provide New Opportunities and Benefits for Society” from 19-20 June 2023 in Lund. During this event, a call for action on research infrastructures in the digital transition will be launched.

The Swedish Presidency will also lead on a Council response to the European Court of Auditors (ECA) report on synergies between Horizon 2020 and the European Structural and Investment Funds (ESIF). Another task will be to amend the Single Basic Act to include the Chips Act Joint Undertaking.

A Presidency conference will also be organised on "The Future of Life Sciences" from 26-27 June 2023 in Stockholm. This will focus on precision medicine.
