European Commission: New sanctions against Russia
12. Apr 2022
The European Commission announced on 8 April that it will terminate the participation of Russian partners in ongoing projects. This concerns the EU programmes Horizon 2020, Horizon Europe and Erasmus+.
The sanction measure is targeting Russian public institutions, but not individual researchers. The Commission will continue to fund individual Russian researchers through the European Research Council (ERC) and the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA), excluding individuals on the EU sanctions lists. The participation of Russian institutions in MSCA consortia, on the other hand, will be terminated by the Commission.
Russian students and scholars participating in the ERASMUS+ programme will also continue to be eligible for funding.
In early March, the Commission had initially suspended payments to Russian institutions in its research and education programmes.
