Extension of the UK’s Horizon Europe guarantee

18. Mar 2022

The United Kingdom government has extended its guarantee to provide national funding for UK participants in Horizon Europe. The guarantee now also covers numerous topics in the second wave of calls published in March 2022.

The UK is currently not associated to Horizon Europe. UK institutions are therefore not eligible to receive funding from Horizon Europe. However, association is being sought in the near future.

In the meantime, UK institutions and researchers can still submit proposals for Horizon Europe funding under the European Commission's transitional arrangement. In the approval and evaluation process, the European Commission treats these applications as if the UK were already associated. Successful UK applicants whose projects are invited for grant preparation while the UK is not yet associated can apply for the UK guarantee funding. The UK will then reimburse the project costs budgeted for the UK institution.

The guarantee applies to projects in explicitly selected Horizon Europe topics for which the grant agreements must be signed before 31 December 2022. The replacement funding is granted for both individual funding and UK participation in consortia and will cover the entire duration of the projects. Calls from Co-funded Partnerships and Institutional Partnerships are not currently included in the guarantee commitment.

The UK Government continues to aim for association to Horizon Europe and is encoraging UK researchers to also apply in Horizon Europe calls that are outside the guarantee.
