DIGITAL Europe Programme: first Work Programmes published

19. Nov 2021

On 10 November 2021, the European Commission published the first three out of a total of four work programmes foreseen for the DIGITAL Europe Programme:

  • DIGITAL Europe Work Programme (runtime: 2021-2022, estimated budget: 1383 Millionen EUR)
  • DIGITAL Europe – European Digital Innovation Hubs (EDIH) Work Programme (runtime: 2021-2023, estimated budget: 329,3 million EUR)
  • DIGITAL Europe – Cybersecurity Work Programme (runtime: 2021-2022, estimated budget: 269 million EUR)
  • DIGITAL Europe – High Performance Computing (this work programme is not yet available and will be implemented by the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking)

The DIGITAL Europe Programme was launched in 2021 for a timeframe of seven years with the main goal of advancing digital change in the EU and making it as independent as possible from non-European platforms or technologies. This programme has a broad target group, ranging from citizens to industrial companies, SMEs or organizations from the public sector. A budget of around 7.59 billion EUR is planned for the entire funding period from 2021 to 2027.

The DIGITAL Europe Programme was designed to complement other programmes such as Horizon Europe or the Connecting Europe Facility. It includes five closely linked core areas (“Specific Objectives”), each having respective sub-goals which are described into more detail in the DIGITAL Europe Programme Regulation dated 29 April 2021:

  • High Performance Computing
  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Cybersecurity and Trust
  • Advanced Digital Skills
  • Deployment and Best Use of Digital Capacity and Interoperability

All of the above-mentioned core areas (“Specific Objectives”) were also included in the work programmes recently published. The associated first calls for applications were opened on 17 November 2021 in the Funding and Tender Opportunities Portal.
