European Commission launches five EU Missions to tackle major challenges

On 29 September 2021, the European Commission officially launched five new missions to tackle in an ambitious and focused manner major societal challenges and find solutions by 2030 in the areas of health, climate and environment.
 
The missions will bring together research and innovation activities funded under Horizon Europe as well as policy measures and legislative initiatives. Because of this, the EU missions will be implemented and managed by the Directorate-General Research & Innovation in cooperation with several other Directorates-General of the European Commission.

The following missions were launched:

  • Adaption to Climate Change 
  • Cancer
  • Restore our Oceans and Waters      
  • Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities        
  • A Soil Deal for Europe

The Missions Work Programme 2021-2022 with topics and calls for proposal was published on 16 June 2021. At present, the work programme for 2022 is under revision and an update will be published in the near future.
