Horizon Europe: EIC Work Programme 2021 published

The European Commission has published the first work programme for the European Innovation Council (EIC) in the new EU Framework programme for research and innovation Horizon Europe.
 
This programme part comes with a budget of around EUR 10 billion for the seven-year programme period and is intended to support the identification, development and implementation of groundbreaking, disruptive and technology-oriented innovations. In addition, the EIC will also support innovative small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with market entry and rapid scale-up.
 
The first work programme that has now been published contains the calls for proposals for 2021 in the three main funding lines of the EIC with a volume of EUR 1.5 billion, including open calls as well as challenge driven calls:

  • Pathfinder: For collaborative projects for basic research, funding of around EUR 168 million is provided via open calls which will open soon. Proposals can be submitted until 19 May 2021. Approx. EUR 132 million is earmarked for challenge driven calls. These are expected to open on 15 June 2021, with a deadline on 27 October 2021
  • Transition: The support of individual applicants and consortia in research activities for the validation and demonstration of advanced technologies and commercialization amounts to approx. EUR 60 million for an open call and approx. EUR 40 million for topic-related challenges. Proposals can be submitted from 15 April to 22 September 2021.
  • Accelerator: For the funding of innovative small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) approx. EUR 592 million are foreseen for an open call and approx. EUR 495 million for challenge driven calls. Short applications can be submitted continously. After a successful review, full proposals can be submitted by the cut off dates 9 June and 6 October 2021

In addition to the calls for proposals for the three main funding lines of the EIC, the 2021 work programme also includes more than EUR 60 million for various coaching and support measures, prizes and expert contracts.
 
On the occasion of the publication of the work programme, the European Commission will present the funding instruments of the EIC on 19 March 2021 as part of an information day for applicants and explain details of the application and the role of investors.
