European Commission launches “New European Bauhaus” initiative

On 18 January, the European Commission has launched its "European Bauhaus" initiative.
 
The "European Bauhaus" was first announced by Commission President Dr Ursula von der Leyen in her State of the Union address in September 2020. This initiative is an interdisciplinary project, aiming to combine design, science and technology and contributing to the implementation of the European Green Deal. Important values at the heart of the Bauhaus initiative are sustainability, aesthetics and social inclusion.
 
The New European Bauhaus consists of three phases:

• Co-design phase: Until summer 2021, the Commission wants to collect ideas and existing examples for the implementation of the Bauhaus concept in an open process. Besides, the first edition of the New European Bauhaus prize will be published this spring.
• Delivery: Through the opening of calls for proposals from September 2021 onwards, the Commission is planning to use EU-funds to implement the Bauhaus idea in five locations in the EU.
• Dissemination: From January 2023, the focus of the initiative will lie on transferring the knowledge gained to the city- and municipal administrations as well as to various experts such as architects and designers.

Funding for the new initiative will possibly come from Horizon Europe, among other sources. Further information, especially on the concrete design and financing of the planned measures, will be announced shortly on the Commission's website.
 
Participation in the co-design process is now possible via the link on the right-hand side. Individual stakeholders can present their initial ideas on the topic of "European Bauhaus" here. Furthermore, stakeholders can engage online in interdisciplinary discussions.
