Objectives

The aim of the socio-economic Sciences and Humanities topic is to create a common understanding of the complex and interrelated socio-economic challenges Europe is confronted with, such as growth, employment and competitiveness, social cohesion, social, cultural and educational challenges within an enlarged European Union, sustainability, environmental challenges, demographic change, as well as migration and integration, quality of life and global interdependence. An improved knowledge base to policy makers of the areas concerned should be provided in the funded research projects. Building such a common understanding should also help to provide solutions to wider international problems. In addition to socio-economic and socio-cultural research and foresight an emphasis will be placed on humanities research.

A large number of other topics in the specific program “Cooperation” (e.g. health, food, agriculture and fisheries, biotechnology, information and communication technology, environment, energy, transport security research) often have a focus on socio-economic issues. A document with potential topics in the thematic work programmes 2012 (published on July 20, 2011) with relevance for socio-economic sciences and humanities has been drafted by KoWi. The document is available to download on the page 'further information'.

Budget

A budget of EUR 623 million for the 7 year duration of the 7th Framework Programme (2007-2013) has been granted to Theme 'Socio-economic Sciences and Humanities'.
