Advanced Investigator Grants

Advanced Grants support excellent and investigator-initiated research projects by leading advanced researchers of any nationality. ERC Advanced Grant applicants may be at any stage of their research career if they have a track-record of significant research achievements in the last 10 years (counted prior to the date of the application deadline). However, applicants with less than 10 years of research experience are also eligible.

Depending on their individual research field, applicants will be expected to match certain benchmarks which will be applied by the ERC to measure the researcher's scientific achievements. These benchmarks include the number of publications as senior author in major international journals, (translated) monographs, patents, conference presentations, research expeditions, involvement in the organization of international conferences, and recognition through scientific prizes/awards or memberships in well-recognised academies.

Advanced Investigator Grants provide funding for up to 5 years, with a maximum annual funding of EUR 500,000 for research projects which will be executed at host institutions in an EU-member or associated state. A project may receive an annual funding of up to EUR 700,000 if one of the following exceptional cases applies:

Projects which require the purchase of major research equipment.
The Principal Investigator is currently engaged in a third country but intends to move to a host institution in an EU member state or associated country in order to build up a new research team and activity.

At the beginning, around 250-300 grants per year will be funded under this scheme. Due to the planned annual budget increase until 2013, the total number of grants awarded will also increase each year.

ERC Grants are awarded to the Principal Investigator for building up a new or consolidating an existing established research team. However, for reasons of financial administration, the grant is transferred to the host institution. The host institution must nevertheless guarantee that the Principal Investigator has the authority to manage the funding and make resource allocations independently.
