Starting Independent Researcher Grants
Starting Independent Researcher Grants
Starting Grants are aimed at promising researchers of any nationality who are at the beginning of an independent research career and will fund the creation or consolidation of their first research team. Researchers can submit a proposal in this scheme if they were awarded their PhD between 2 to 12 years (in exceptional cases: up to 16 years and 6 months) prior to the publication date of the respective call for proposals.
The research project has to be executed at host institutions in an EU-member or associated state. ERC Starting Grants will be awarded for up to 5 years, with an annual funding of up to EUR 1,5 million.
From the Work Programme 2013, the funding scheme will be devided into to seperate calls: Starting Grants and Consolidator Grants. Scientists who were awarded their PhD between 2 to 7 years are eligible for the Starting Grants scheme whereas scientists who were awarded their PhD between 7 to 12 years after their PhD can apply for the Consolidator Grants.
It is expected that approximately 250 grants can be funded per year. With the yearly ERC budget increase until 2013, the number of projects funded will also increase during the upcoming calls.
ERC Grants are awarded to the Principal Investigator for building up a new or consolidating an existing established research team. However, for reasons of financial administration, the grant is transferred to the host institution. The host institution must nevertheless guarantee that the Principal Investigator has the authority to manage the funding and make resource allocations independently.
