Advanced Manufacturing

Topics

The Key Enabling Technology "Advanced Manufacturing and Processing" covers four overarching lines of activity:

Technologies for Factories of the Future

Supporting sustainable, industrial growth by facilitating a strategic shift in Europe from cost‑based manufacturing to a concept based on developing high added value products. This requires producing more, while using less material, less energy and generating less waste and pollution. The focus will be on the development and integration of future adaptive production systems, particularly considering the needs of European small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), in order to achieve advanced and sustainable manufacturing systems and processes.

Technologies Enabling Energy-efficient, Low Environmental Impact Buildings and Systems

Reducing energy consumption and CO2 emissions by developing and use of sustainable construction technologies, increased implementation of systems and materials in new, renovated and retrofitted buildings. Taking into account life-cycle considerations and the growing importance of design-build-operate concepts for a transition to nearly zero energy buildings in Europe by 2020 and the realisation of energy-efficient districts with the collaboration of the interested stakeholder community.

Sustainable, Resource-efficient and Low-carbon Technologies in Energy-intensive Process Industries

Increasing the competitiveness of process industries (e.g. chemistry, pulp and paper, glass, non-ferrous metals and steel) by drastically improving resource and energy efficiencies. The focus will be on the development and validation of technologies for innovative substances and materials, of technological solutions for low-carbon products as well as less energy-intensive processes and services along the value chain, and of ultra-low carbon production technologies and techniques.

New Sustainable Business Models

Cross-sectoral cooperation concerning concepts and methods for "knowledge-based" specialised production boosting organisational creativity and innovation. This includes innovative business models in order to adapt to global value chains, global networks and new markets.

More detailed information on the specific research areas is provided in the Specific Programme.
