Topics

This Societal Challenge covers four thematic areas:

1. Disaster-resilience: safeguarding and securing society, including adapting to climate change

The aim of this call is to enhance the resilience of our society against natural and man-made disasters including from extreme weather events, crime and terrorism. Novel solutions for the protection of critical infrastructure are supposed to be developed. The call comprises the issues of Crisis management, Disaster Resilience & Climate Change, Critical Infrastructure Protection, Communication technologies and interoperability and the ethical and societal dimension.

2. Fight against crime and Terrorism

To prevent incidents or to mitigate their potential consequences, new capabilities for fighting and preventing crime, illegal trafficking and terrorism (including cyber-crime and cyber-terrorism) are required. This call ranges from the development of new forensic tools to strengthening law enforcement capabilities and securing urban areas.

3. Border Security and External Security

The primary aim of this call is to improve border security, ranging from optimized maritime border protection to supply chain security. It also focuses on supporting the Union's external security policies in civilian tasks including conflict prevention and peace building.

4. Digital Security: Cybersecurity, Privacy and Trust

This call is an instrument to reach the goals of the European Strategy for Cybersecurity and aims for the development of enhanced cybersecurity ranging from secure information sharing to new assurance models.

This call is managed by DG Connect.

As cross-cutting topics, social, legal and ethical questions as well as standardization and interoperability are addressed in the calls listed above.

In addition to the above mentioned calls, there will be several other activities to be funded. Those activities comprise for example public procurement actions related to Galileo "Public Regulated Service (PRS)", the establishing of the "space surveillance and tracking (SST) support programme" or the implementation of the "Security Industrial Policy Action Plan".
