Cross-cutting aspects

The thematic area energy concerns a number of cross-cutting issues which are also relevant for other Societal Challenges, such as emission reduction (Societal Challenge "Climate Action"), bio-mass and biofuels (Societal Challenge "Food Security") and fuel cells and smart cities (Societal Challenge "Transport").

Additionally, there are also close links to Part II of Horizon 2020, Industrial Leadership, especially to the area of Information and Communication technologies (ICT) (concerning energy systems, smart grids and smart cities), to the Public-Private Partnerships "Energy-efficient Buildings" and "Sustainable Process Industry" and to Industrial Leadership area "Advanced Materials".

Proposals concerning subjects within this Societal Challenge might also be eligible for funding in the framework of the sub-programme Future and Emerging Technologies, FET Open (bottom-up) or FET Proactive (top-down), if they involve high-risk, visionary and interdisciplinary topics for the development of future technologies.
