Further funding opportunities

In the part Science with and for Society (SwafS) the cross-cutting term "Responsible Research and Innovation" (RRI) plays an important role. It will be taken up by all activities as appropriate. RRI governance has itself become a field of experimentation and innovation concentrating on five key elements:

  • societal engagement
  • gender equality and gender in research and innovation content
  • open access
  • science education and
  • ethics

All calls are supporting RRI. Most of the activities require the establishment of multi-stakeholder consortia, including institutions from the SSH domain, SMEs and Civil Society Organisations, etc.

With regard to Social Innovation, the Directorate-General (DG) Enterprise and Industry (DG ENTR) provides funding for the network platform Social Innovation Europe and the European Social Innovation Competition. Also, the DG offers information on several topics and funding opportunities beyond the Research Framework Programme.

DG Education and Culture (DG EAC) supports studies in the field of (higher) education via calls for tender and other instruments.

Several Member States have established Joint Programming Initiatives (JPIs) which issue calls for proposals that might also be interesting for researchers of the Social Sciences and Humanities:

For the cooperation of national and regional funding programmes between Member and Associated States, several ERA-NETs (European Research Area Networks) have been established in the field of the Social Sciences and Humanities:

  • ERA-NET New Opportunities for Research Funding Agency Cooperation in Europe (NORFACE)
  • ERA-NET Humanities in the European Research Area (HERA)
