EU-Commission publishes Energy Roadmap 2050

On December, 15 2011 the European Commission came forward with its communication "Energy Roadmap 2050".

The proposal shows how the GHG emissions in the European Union can be reduced by 80 % by 2050 compared to 1990. Under the premise that energy supply and competitiveness will not be affected, the Commission analyzed different scenarios for the decarbonisation of the energy system and their effects.

By varying combination of improving the energy efficiency, developing the renewable energy sources, use of nuclear energy and CO2 Capture and Storage (CCS) the Commission regards the achieving of the GHG reduction target as possible. The communication shall be the basis for actions by the member states and shall create a secure investment environment.

In addition, further European energy policy initiatives shall follow in the coming years based on this energy roadmap.
