The ERC Synergy Grants are aimed at outstanding researchers throughout Europe, who jointly work on an innovative research project. The group can consist of a minimum of two and a maximum of four Principal Investigators (PIs). Generally, the objective of the Synergy Grants is to foster interdisciplinary research.
ERC Syngergy Grants can be granted for a period of up to 6 years and comprise a maximum funding of 15 million EUR. The joint research project does not have to be conducted at one and the same location for the whole period of its duration. However, a "core time" of joint research over the course of the project is expected. Projects which are designed as a network or consortium collaboration similar to those projects within the "Cooperation" programme cannot be funded.
