Proposals submitted to the ERC are evaluated in an internationally organised peer-review process conducted by independent experts. These experts have been selected by the Scientific Council on the basis of scientific qualification.

Evaluation procedure: Starting Grants
The one-step proposal submission of the proposal is followed by a two-step evaluation procedure. In the first evaluation step, only the first part of the proposal will be assessed by the evaluators. Successful proposal of the first stage will then be reviewed in full by the panel evaluators as well as remote evaluators - including an interview in Brussels.

Evaluation procedure: Synergy Grants
The one-step proposal submission of the proposal is followed by a two-step evaluation procedure. In the first evaluation step, one of five panels will review the full proposal. Proposals with a very good rating and which are above the budgetary cut-off level (approximately 2.5 times the panel's indicative budget) will be retained and pass to the second step. In the second step of the evaluation procedures, the proposals will be reviewed by a new panel.
